Success Requires a Sense of Urgency

What should my strategy be this time of year if I am looking to improve my condition over the long term?  I feel more motivated now than ever to get moving towards my goals and I have so many!  The New Year is getting pretty close, should I aim to maintain now and wait until jan 1 to get going?

Hell no you should not wait, fitness is a matter that requires a sense of urgency to be successful, do not put it off to the New Year or you will regret it!   If these goals are important to you then you must dedicate resources, time and good old fashioned hard work to achieve them.  The Fat Loss driven crowd especially must get on the right track now to avoid the pit falls of the holidays.  You see without a plan in place or any momentum people rationalize and go hog wild during the holidays waiting for Jan 1 to take corrective action.  However this is a flawed tactic as it only ends up in creating more work to be done come January 1.  if your long term goal is to lose 20 pounds, why pack on 10 more between now and then to make your task even harder?

Lets face it January 1 is not necessarily a good time to get started with a program after going in the wrong direction.  Most people are catching up from vacations and other matters.  You would be best served to have productive habits in place so you can hit the ground running with some progress show for during the previous couple of months.

Look the Part and Be the Part with Break Set Training

Hey Scott a friend of mine packed on 10 pounds of muscle working with you over the past couple months and I want to do the same.  His functional strength shot through the roof as he dominates when we play basketball, flag football etc.  What do you suggest in terms of training, I am so confused- do I train heavy for mass or use a lot of reps to get cut?

Lately I have been combining both strength and hypertrophy functions in the same workout with great success.  Five of my clients who tried this routine gained an average of 8 pounds of muscle in a 2 month period.    As your friend can attest I arm people with the programs they need to make the most out of their training buck.  Through my own experimentation I came up with a routine called break up sets.  You will do a set of 6 with a 20 sec break, set of 4 with a 20 sec break and another set of 4 to consist of one set for the purposes of this program.  Yes it sounds like a strip set, but you do not reduce the load.  You will perform a total of 14 reps within a one minute time span using a much higher load than you would if doing 14 consecutive reps. On a db bench press for example I can use 110 pounders when doing 6-4-4 but only about 70 when doing 14 reps in a row.   So do the math and figure out the average poundage per rep, you are sorely mistaken if you think the 20 sec breaks between the phases of the break set let you off the hook.  That is only enough time for the nervous system to recover enough so that you can handle the load, however your muscles will screaming at you by the end of the workout. 

 Packing so much work into a confined space of time shocks the system into rapid growth, but only if you capitalize on the opportunity.  You can trash your muscles during training, but you must put more effort into the other 23 hours of each day to promote rapid recovery so that you can maximize growth.  An effective trainer will always consider the clients recovery capacity when building a program, otherwise an imbalance between work and recovery capability will cause overtraining which will block any progress.
