A basic scientific theory identifying carbohydrates as an easily accessible fuel source for working muscles is not flawed, just obsolete as carbohydrates are no longer the only “energy” game in town.   The old school of thought was to take massive amounts of carbohydrates into the system throughout the day to load glycogen (stored energy).  However loading glycogen will also force the body to use all of this stored fuel before it can burn off stored body fat.  A full glycogen tank can be good for prolonging endurance (events 75 minutes or more), but it is bad for your waistline.  Carbs that cannot be stored as glycogen will be converted to body fat.
